Welcome to the web site of St Albans Townsend Bowls Club
8 Waverley Road, St Albans, AL3 5PA - 01727 852361
Located in the historic city of St Albans, Hertfordshire we are an active and welcoming outdoor bowling club with (normally!) a full calendar of friendly and competitive events during the summer along with social events throughout the year. Despite the covid restrictions we succeeded in holding numerous sessions and even a few competitions, and are now looking forward to the start of the 2021 -2022 season.
We are now delighted to be able to confirm that the latest information indicates that we intend to open our green for the new season on Saturday 10th April. From this date on, members will be able to organise roll ups and start getting used to the green again! We will of course still be subject to sensible precautions, possibly limiting the numbers playing on a rink at any time, and maintaining social distancing, but the return to activity will be greeted by most with huge relief and expectation!
Should you wish to get involved, and to book a taster session with one of our county coaches, then simply give us a ring or make on line contact. We will provide all you need to enjoy this amazing sport, and now is the ideal time to think about some outdoor exercise!
Townsend Bowls Club competes at many different levels, and we have numerous teams involving almost all our members in matches against other clubs.
When allowed, friendlies are held both midweek and at weekends against other local teams. These are normally mixed and played in the spirit for which bowls is known - very often starting and finishing with a drink in the bar along with one's opponents! New starters are always welcome at the club, where we offer beginner training by our two highly qualified and experienced coaches.
Our last full season was particularly special as we celebrated our centenary with matches against other clubs who shared this milestone, as well as games against the Royal Household at Windsor and touring teams including London Welsh, London Scottish and a District select team made up of members of other clubs in the St Albans area. Many of these teams, including the Royal Household, are booked in for a return fixture in the next few weeks.
As well as having what is generally considered to be one of the best greens in the County, Townsend has a very modern club house with a newly refurbished kichen, a well stocked bar, a main lounge with large picture windows overlooking the green and two viewing galleries offering a birdseye view of the competition below.
Our originally published plan was to start the season on April 12th when Annie Brewster, our local County Councillor with special responsibility for leisure and sport in the area had agreed to open the green. She had also readily agreed to accept our invitation to present our trophies and participate in backing the winners at our ever popular Race Night in mid October. Now a date for a full reopening after the shut down is confirmed by the Government, the rearranged schedule for all events and fixtures can now also be published, with Councillor Brewster again agreeing to attend for the President''s Day opening ceremony on Saturday 24th April. As well as officially opening the green, we hope that this most sporty lady will be fully participating in the afternoon's matches!
