Fours – Full Responsibilities

Lead

  • Sets the mat and jack when winning the end
  • Establishes the line for the team
  • Clears bowls when losing the end

Second

  • Plays positional and covering shots
  • Supports the third with information
  • May measure if the third is occupied

Third (Vice‑Skip)

  • Advises the skip on head details
  • Plays complex shots
  • Primary measurer
  • Agrees the score with the opposing third
  • Signals the score to the skips

Skip

  • Full tactical control
  • Plays pressure bowls
  • Confirms score signalled by the third
  • Leads dispute resolution if needed

End‑of‑End Duties

  • Clearing bowls: losing lead
  • Setting mat/jack: winning lead
  • Measuring: third (vice‑skip)
  • Agreeing score: thirds
  • Scoreboard: usually losing lead or a designated team member
  • Disputes
    1. Thirds attempt to resolve
    2. Skips discuss
    3. Umpire called if still unresolved
    4. Umpire’s decision is final
