Singles – Full Responsibilities

On the mat

• Control mat and jack length
• Build pressure with consistent draw shots
• Adapt quickly to pace and line
• Manage scoreboard strategy (chasing vs defending)

End‑of‑End Duties

• Player who loses the end clears the bowls
  This keeps the game flowing and avoids confusion about who is preparing for the next end.
• Player who wins the end sets the mat and delivers the jack
  This is a tactical advantage — the winner chooses the length.
• Measuring
  • Either player may measure.
  • Traditionally, the player not holding shot measures first.
  • If still unclear, both players measure together.
• Agreeing the score
  Both players must verbally confirm the score before the next end begins. The marker is there to help measure and not to make decisions on the final shot count. It is usually the case the player with the wood(s) nearest the jack asks for the number of shots they think they hold.
• Disputes
  • If a marker is present (in competitions), they assist.
  • If still unresolved, call the umpire.
  • The umpire’s decision is final.
